Website Tutorial for Public Researchers

The Vanderbilt Television News Archive houses over a million news stories and half a million commercial breaks from August 5th, 1968 to present day. This tutorial helps public researchers through the process of borrowing one or more clips, or segments, from the Archive.

  1. Home Page:
  2. Login
    • If you have not yet logged in, or created an account, you will see a login page requesting your email address.
    • If you have an account, enter your email address and then your password.
    • If you have not yet created an account, first add your email address then click Sign Up. You will be asked a few basic questions to complete your registration.
      • Please allow up to 10 minutes to receive the account verification code. It will come from <no-reply@verificationemail.com> and may be caught in your spam folder.
    • If you forgot your password, click Forgot password.
    • Once logged in, you will be able to add segments and broadcasts to your basket for check out.
    • You can now go directly to a record if you have the link, or proceed to search to find segments or broadcasts related to your search topic.
  3.  Search.
    • For this example, we will search for “Coral Reefs” in the Search Term(s) search bar, where it reads “Enter search terms.”

  4. Details
    • Scroll down the page to the search results area.
    • Click Details for a segment of interest.
    • On the details page, the title, network, duration, and description, provides you with additional information about the segment or broadcast.
  5. Add Clip
    • To add this item to your basket for eventual checkout, click Add clip.
  6. Basket
    • While logged in, find your basket basket icon icon in the top navigation next to Logout.
    • You are now viewing your basket, you should have one or more items.
    • The price of each item is listed, plus the total. If everything looks correct, proceed to Check Out.

  7. Check out
    • First click on Check Out.
    • Please read the Copyright Acknowledgement statement.
    • Check the box for Acknowledgement and Proceed to Checkout.
  8. Payment Portal
    • Complete the payment information
    • Click Pay
    • Once payment is received, you can print the payment confirmation page for your receipt.
    • payment complete message.
  9. Once payment is complete, you can click Borrowed Items to view your items.
    • You can also click My Account, at any time to view any existing borrowed items.
  10. Watch or Download
    • By either clicking on Borrowed Items or My Account, you can view items that are currently checked out to you.
    • Click Actions on any item you wish to watch or download.

  11. Final Details
    • Borrowed items will remain in this space for two weeks (14 days).
    • After the due date, they will be automatically returned to the catalog.
    • View your Order History by scrolling down below your active items.
